Oil profits and support from the Soviet Union have fueled the expansion of Libya's air force, which is one of the largest and strongest in North Africa, consisting 580 combat aircraft and 8,000 men, along with large numbers of Syrian, North Korean, Palestinian, and Pakistani "technical advisors". Its greatest weakness is a poor standard of aircrew training, as evidenced by its defeats in small clashes with the US Navy in the 1980's.
